Dine In or Take Out?

What’s for dinner? This question is that is asked by people all over the world. In Tuscaloosa, Alabama there is a wide variety of choices that residents and visitors may choose from; Chinese food is one of them. Swen is a small white building conveniently located on the University of Alabama campus and only ten minutes away from the interstate on University Boulevard. It is commonly perceived as a take out only restaurant, however; Swen also offers customers the option to sit down in a classy environment and enjoy a well portioned meal that is quickly served to them by friendly employees. Even though Swen is a small establishment, its extensive menu, affordable prices, and delightful environment create a dining experience that provides an answer to a popular inquiry on what to eat.

Upon walking into the restaurant I was immediately relieved from the heat by a refreshingly cool atmosphere. The waiting area was comfortably accessorized with seating, and the dining area was charmingly illuminated with rose colored wall sconces that added a sense of romance to the room. The walls were tastefully decorated in warm colors and oriental artwork. For such a small building, there were plenty of tables that were spaciously arranged providing privacy and convenience.

After waiting in line for only three minutes, I was greeted by a smiling host that was both courteous and apologetic for the wait, and then lead to a clean table that was already adorned with silverware, a glass of ice water, and a small tea light candle that added a sense of romance to the room.

With a large variety of appetizers, side orders, and main dishes that included beef, poultry, seafood, pork, and vegetarian options, I was overwhelmed with the decision on what to order. While looking over the menu, I was offered several different specials while my beverage was brought to me within minutes of my request. The waiter was well informed on the ingredients of many dishes and was also very patient with me when I inquired upon several different options. I finally decided on the Wonderful Chicken accompanied by fried rice and steamed broccoli. It did not take long for my meal to arrive, and I was delighted by the size of the proportions that were on my plate.

Not only were there dozens of different entrees, the prices were surprisingly set at an affordable cost that even a student can afford. While I could have gone out for a burger and fries, I was just as satisfied with a delectable oriental dinner for the same cost. Even though I decided upon separate menu selections, (as opposed to a pre set meal) the bill for my delicious supper did not break my wallet. The old saying “you get what you paid for” doesn’t relate to Swen, their prices are surprisingly low considering the amount of food you get and the quality of the cuisine and service.

Choosing what to have for dinner doesn’t have to be a hassle. Swen Chinese Restaurant provides customers with a menu that is not only large but also inexpensive, and you can either bring it home or sit down to enjoy your meal in a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. My experience at this charming venue has left me with a satisfied hunger and great expectations for future service. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for the best Chinese food that Tuscaloosa has to offer.

Love the Triple Mongolian (Beef, Chicken, & Shrimp). Egg rolls & Crab Angels are good also, not sure what one of the previous reviewers was on when he said they weren't. Staff is so friendly, service is quicker than any other place in town. GREAT PLACE TO EAT!!!!

Swen’s sounds like it should be a Swedish smorgasbord, but is in fact a Chinese restaurant. Swen’s is located in the same strip mall as Los Tarascos, on McFarland Blvd. in Northport. However it is not as big or as nice, and I did not find the service anywhere near as good.

The menu consists of a list of typical Chinese platters. There is no buffet here, and also no "combination meals", which is what I was really hoping for, as these tend to give you a greater variety at a better price. I had the Moo Goo Gai Pan, which was good, and my sweetie had something with deep fried shrimp, covered in a sauce. The food was tasty and not too expensive, but the décor and the service were only adequate. (I had to wait for an iced tea refill!)

Given the choice, I would rather go to a Chinese buffet, where you can get a much greater variety of food for the same price.

The best Chinese food in the state

The servers are extremely friendly and the atmosphere is casual and relaxed. The prices are great. For lunch, you can get a special of a almost any pint sized entree with fried rice, an egg roll, and soup for less than $5 or you can get a lunch combo with two different entrees for less than $8. For dinner, you can order just a pint or a quart, or you can get the dinner combo for $10.95 and get two pints, fried rice, soup, egg roll, and 2 crab angles. That's enough food for dinner and lunch the next day. While you are waiting for the first food items to come up (which is extremely fast) you can munch on the free wontons. Every entree I have had is GREAT but I highly recommend the hot and sour soup and the hot and spicy chicken. They also make sure to keep the drinks filled. Make sure to order some steamed dumplings as well. Swen recently got a liquor licence and are also about to open a second store on the Strip next to Qdoba. This is the best place in town and there is no excuse to eat any where else - I don't!

Hole in the Wall, but the Best Chinese Food in Tuscaloosa

The place is the definition of a hole in the wall. However, it has the best Chinese food in Tuscaloosa (quite a feat considering it's not even in Tuscaloosa!). The hot and sour soup is to die for (and is only a $1 a cup). My favorite dish is the Triple Mongolian (Beef, Shrimp, and Chicken). The wait staff is great: food always arrives in ten minutes or less and drink are always filled. The egg roll isn't very good and the time I tried their crab rangoon (which they called "crab angles"), it was very salty and needed a good amount of sweet and sour sauce to drench the taste (when I normally like to mine plain). Nevertheless, the ample servings and the low prices give this place my vote for best in Tuscaloosa-Northport.

Swen's, while not the most attractive restaurant, certainly makes up for appearance and location with its great selection of Chinese food. The food typically comes out very quickly (within 5-10 minutes) and is always hot, fresh, and delicious. The prices are also very reasonable. Portions are large -- we always take some home for another meal (if ordering a quart or combo). The hot and sour soup is absolutely wonderful.
