Ruan Thai

Ruan Thai, located on "the Strip" on University Blvd is a great addition to Tuscaloosa. I remember when the paper posted that Ruan Thai had real monks come in to bless the restaurant upon its opening. Those monks must have really done a good job because it is without doubt one of the better Thai places we've tried. Unfortunately it took us a while to get over there to try it but we were certainly pleased when we did.

The first thing that hit us upon entering was the wonderful smell of Thai food. It has a sweet and spicy aroma that seems to awaken the senses. The restaurant is located in a converted home so there are several rooms in which to dine, all with a Thai theme. The ceiling of the room in which we were seated had a very unique mural worth seeing in person.

Our server Dava welcomed us and promptly started attending to our needs. We started off with the Ruan Thai Crabs and Spicy Fried Wontons for appetizers. Both were delicious. For entrees that evening, I had the Kang Pa-Nang Curry with Shrimp, while the other editor had the Pad Graprow with Chicken. We both agreed that the Kang Pa-Nang was the best of the two, but it was a very close call. Plus its fun to say "Kang Pa-Nang".

The portions were large and filling. Just for the sake of the website here and you the viewer, we forced ourselves to have the Homemade Coconut Ice Cream for dessert. It had a rich coconut flavor. A sweet treat that any coconut lover would enjoy.

All in all it was a great evening and we will be back as soon as possible. If you've never tried Thai food, this is a good place to start, but be warned, you'll find yourself wanting to go back again and again.

The Globe restaurant in historic downtown Northport is a wonderful experience from the decor to the terrific meals. Downtown Northport is unique in and of itself, but once you're inside The Globe you'll be taken to a new place entirely. Named for the Globe Theatre, owned in part by William Shakespeare and whose plays were performed there, The Globe restaurant has a Shakespearean theme throughout and is especially pleasing to not only the eye, but the palate.

The experience on our last evening there had been wonderful as usual. Our server Chase lead us through our evening and delivered consistently good service throughout.
The food as always was outstanding. Everything from the fresh bread and assortments that come with the meal, through to dessert (the bread brought out at the beginning of the meal is in particular a favorite of our editors) was top notch. Another great feature of The Globe is the vast selection of beers and wines. Old Peculiar, a brand of ale we plan to get to know well, was what was had that evening and is highly suggested.

We'd recommend this restaurant to anyone who wishes for a unique experience in the Tuscaloosa area because of the high quality of food along with a strong focus on service. The Globe has provided the editors with many wonderful evenings (and a few lunches too) through the 16 years since their doors opened, we plan to dine there many more times in the future.

Ken's Downtown Pizza & Grill

Ken's Downtown Pizza and Grill, located in Temerson Square in Downtown Tuscaloosa, makes a strong showing. The other editor and I went downtown on an Alabama Crimson Tide football gameday weekend. We sat outside in perfect weather with some cold drinks and a delicious late lunch. Ken came out to greet us and make sure everything was OK.
We had a great host, cold beverages, a wonderful environment and some of the best food in Tuscaloosa. Man, life is good.

I wasn't sure what I wanted to eat so I asked Ken what he thought. He recommended that I have the Philly Cheese Steak Wrap. I wasn't sure if I had ever eaten a wrap before. But I decided to go with it and man was I happy that I did. The meat and cheese melted together into some kind of wonderful flavor and texture party in my mouth. I also had Ken's beer battered onion rings which pleased the editor as well.

By this point I was fat and happy after gorging myself on stuffed jalapenos, philly cheese steak, waffle fries, beer battered onion rings, and a few select sampleings from the other editor's plate.

Ken's has a very relaxed atmosphere with a great attitude. When you visit Ken's, I would recommend letting your hair down outside (weather permitting).

Kozy's

Any special occasion will be more special with a trip to one of Tuscaloosa's hidden treasures, Kozy's. Located on Loop Road, Kozy's is a distinctive eatery with a look and feel all its own. From the black and white motif, to the live jazz, you'll know you're in for something different, something good. Whether enjoying an expertly prepared meal or sipping wine at the bar, plan for an enjoyable evening.

Our last visit was as pleasing as all the rest. Our server Keith was attentive and knowledgeable. Service is a priority here, as are delicious and inspired dishes. The meal was well paced and not forced. All was good from appetizer to dessert. All of our needs were timely met and anticipated. We definitely plan to go back again.

The menu has a nice assortment of staples such as Duck a l' Orange, Grilled Pork Tenderloin and Filet Mignon as well as some interesting chicken, seafood and lamb dishes. While most think of Kozy's as just that, a cozy place for a dinner date, they can also accommodate larger groups with a private dining area. Regardless of the occasion you're sure to want to try Kozy's.
